| This book defines and illustrates the fundamental principles, exercises, throws, forms and techniques of keijutsukai aikido, an innovative concept developed by Makiyama that emphasizes a rational and practical approach to teaching and learning aikido. Makiyama is the only American to have officially attained a ranking of eighth dan along with a certification of shihan. He was instrumental in forming the first official branch of the Aikido Yoshinkan outside of Japan during the 1950s, and authored one of the first books in English on aikido.
